Tribal:Pura rides and hotels

Hi all.

I've had questions about where people are staying (or should stay) while in town for the workshop. Also, some people would like to fly in and are wondering if they can get rides to and from the hotel/workshop/show. Would anyone be willing to volunteer? I'd love to do it, but I have the feeling I'm going to have my hands full trying to make sure that Carolena and Megha have everything they need.

If people end up staying at the same hotel, I could give some rides. I don't want to run fifty million places though, cuz I'd like to enjoy the weekend. But I'd do some airport runs. Then if they are staying at the same place I could pick some up on the way to events. I can fit 6 others. Have you thought of getting a block of rooms somewhere?

I was thinking about it, but I'd like to know where people are planning on staying. The Howard Johnson and Radisson are the closest ones, but they aren't the cheapest.

I know people really like the Doublewood, and I personally have had good experience with the Holiday Inn, but they're sort of across town...although, there's a whole bunch of hotels in various price ranges in that area.

But yeah, if people let me know what they want to do (i.e. where they want to go), I'll consider reserving a block. I have to get a place for Megha and Carolena anyway.

Well I'm planning/hoping on coming and bringing a whole vanful of people at the same time. So we'd need a hotel, but it wouldn't necessarily have to be super close to the workshop, since we'd have the van to commute. What are the approx price ranges of the Radisson and Howard Johnson?

If people want to stay down by the mall, there's a whole slew of hotels there...but it is a ways across town. (Although it'll take you a whole 10 minutes to get from hotel to workshop.) Anyway, down there you've got everything from Motel 6 to the Ramada...

OK Cherish. So, I'm still thinking about this and thus restarting this thread. Tell us out-of-towners what is it like getting around Fargo? Can you easily call or hail a taxi or is rental car the most feasible ground transport? I prefer to stay in a nice hotel, for me it is a way of pampering myself a bit and feeling comfortable. Would that be the Radisson and HJ or which ones? I'm not talking 5 stars just somewhere from 3.5-4.5 is fine!
Where is your link to workshops and pricing information?

      Let's see:

The Radisson down by the workshop is pretty nice. The rooms aren't that bad (starting around $70/night), but the restaurant there is pricey. On the other hand, the food is *really* good. Also, I'll be picking up Carolena and Meg (since I'm probably going to put them up there), so I'd have room for 1 or 2 more people.

The problem with downtown is that the food choices aren't exactly "fast food"...most of them are sit down places. Aladdin's Cafe and Cynthia's deli would be good choices for lunch, though.

The doublewood is a favorite, which is down by the mall, and there are several other hotels in that area (everything from Motel 6 to the Ramada Inn, which is probably right up there with the Radisson). Other chains are Holiday Inn, AmericInn, Super 8. I was hoping I could convince LeAnn to pick up a few people, or if people carpool from there, it would make it easiest. There are TONS of food places there.

To get from there to the workshop from those hotels, you can either find I-29 (which is pretty easy) and take it north to Main Ave. Follow Main East until 11th St., turn south, and it's one block away.

The other way is to follow 13th Ave (which is also very easy), follow that to 10th St., go north on 10th St. until 2nd Ave. S. Turn left on 2nd, and it's one block away.

Either route unfortunately has a lot of stoplights, which is why getting across Fargo takes way longer than it should. :-) However, neither route is very complicated.

There are buses and cabs, but living all the way across town and having kids, I don't use them that often. Usually carpool is the easiest way to get around.

(Apparently the amberwavesbellydance.com isn't working so well. I apologize for that.)

Okay...I hope that answers the major questions.

There is fastfood downtown. Broadway subs, Subway, Hardees, and the Doghouse. There is also Sammy's pizza and Juanos which aren't too pricey and are fairly fast (for sitdown restaurants). Other food choices downtown include the Cajun Cafe, the Restaurant (or HoDo), and the Great Northern (not to be confused with the Northern which is down the road and has strippers).

Also a note on cabs. They have to be called in. They don't sit and wait for customers as they do in larger cities.

And I don't mind at all picking people up.

I ate at the Great Northern when I was up for the MECDA event. It was very good so I recommend it highly!

Do you know where you guys are planning on staying for the event?

Have you thought about approaching your local hotels to see who might offer a block of rooms at a discount price for your event? I know some of the other belly dance workshops around the country are doing that. It makes things a lot easier and more economical for out of town attendees. Think about it (I hope). I don't know what is involved to accomplish this but I bet your hotels would be helpful if you asked. Let us know.

I'll do that if I can get an idea of where people want to stay. I know I've done this with the Doublewood before (and we've done bellydancing meetings there, too). I know that some people felt that was out of their price range. So as soon as I can get a consensus on where people would like to stay, I'll approach the hotel.

              Cherish-
Not sure where we will stay for the event, but if we got a discounted rate at a select hotel that would definitely help. It seems like that is common for a lot of workshops - especially ones with out of town visitors :)

A commute full of stop lights to get from the hotel to the workshop doesn't sound bad. I'll be driving 4(?) hrs to get there - so what's a short commute? It takes at least 20 minutes to get anywhere in Winnipeg, and we even have a ?famous? intersection locally known as 'confusion corner' because the geometry is beyond bizarre. A ride across Fargo will be like nothing I'm sure. We'll probably go for the lower cost Motel. Depending on how full my van is, I may even have room to bring other workshop attendees who are staying in the same hotel.

Another thing - to supplement the directions Cherish has already listed I'll check out Mapquest or some other online map site. CAA can also likely provide me with local area maps.
