Cold feet

Hi guys...

I've been getting a lot of news of people being busy or not having money...and I'm starting to reconsider if the Carolena workshop really is going to fly.

So, in that vein, could you guys tell me what you've heard. Are you guys thinking of coming? Can you honestly swing it? If I cancel soon, I won't have to lose "my deposit", so to speak...but if I wait too long, then I will.

So please fill me in since a lot of you are out of town. Most of what I've heard has been "no money" or "no interest"...whereas two months ago everyone said they were really excited about coming....

If you have it, I will definatly be there. With bells on if need be ;) I understand why you're worried though. All I can say is what you told me. People aren't going to send their registrations in until the very last minute of the early registration fees. Well except me. I'll be sending mine in as soon as I catch up from paying for the other 2 workshops I'm going to. I'm sending off Domba tomorrow...

Cherish - you've just got the jitters. I want badly to come, but realistically I can't give you a 100% for sure either. I don't want to make the drive by myself, and a flight is about $400 (checked expedia today) so unless I've got at least one other to share the driving with - it ain't gonna happen. Ideally, I'll bring a van load of 3 others with me and we'll perform too - I just don't want to commit where it's not all under my control. Not very fair to you. There will be at least 2 of us from the great white north who make I'm sure. :)

The way I look at, this is an amazing chance for me to dance in a workshop with Carolena without having to go all the way to California to see her. I'm hoping others see it that way too.

Yeah, I do have the jitters...here's why:

Three people who assured me they would be coming are now not coming (or at best, a weak maybe). I realize that life gets in the way and things come up at work, but these were the people who I assured me that they'd make it come h*ll or high water.

I made an estimate we could get 10 people from Winnipeg, 10 from Fargo, 10 from Minneapolis, and 5-10 from other areas (like Minot, for instance). This is the enrollment required to break even.

Now, I still have the option of applying for a grant. However, if that doesn't come through and the numbers aren't looking good, I may have to rethink this. I figure I'll give it until a couple days into August, though...(like you said LeAnn, a couple days after the early fee deadline). If I don't get enough people, we're looking at a couple thousand dollars of my own money...and there are other things I'd like to spend a couple thousand dollars on...like the ATS teacher certification thing.

I hope that by closer to August things will look different. I know one of my troupe said she couldn't make a decision until July.

What about others out there who have put on workshops? What are your experiences with last minute registrations? Is this the norm?

Sounds like the usual to me (after hosting 5 or so). Some times they come, sometimes they don't - in Winnipeg, I've found it impossible to guess when that will/won't happen. Some of my workshops have been a huge success $-wise, but I've also lost a lot on ones where the attendance was low. It doesn't always seem to matter who the instructor(s) is either. It's a brutal call for the sponsor to make - you really do stand to lose thousands of dollars when the attendance isn't as high as you need it to be. Good luck making your decision, Cherish - we're all behind you no matter what.

I think some of it has to do with timing, and I think having it on a holiday weekend helps. I've gotten people from far away, and I think it's because they have a bit more time to travel.

It sounds like it's going to work out...I have 1/5 of the registrations I need to break even, and I've heard from a lot of people who want to come. I'm guessing I'll hit pretty close to the break even point. Some are trying to talk friends into it...and I'm crossing my fingers that they succeed.

I have been advertising a lot in bellydance venues and people are being helpful about spreading info to their local groups. Locally, I've not seen that there's much of an interest in bellydance, so I haven't done much advertising. The local bellydancers are not being as supportive as I'd like, but that's life.

              So...I think it's working out. :-)

                high five!!!

Personally, I love long weekends for workshops too -whether it's attending or hosting - always got my best turnout for workshops I've hosted. So much easier for dancers to come from out of state/province, attend both days, and not miss any time from work.

Man, it's gonna come up fast - getting excited up here! :o)

          Cherish,
I know if you have the workshop, I will definitely attend. It sounds like a great opportunity. I will mention it to the rest of TNT as well. I imagine others will want to go as well. :)

I can understand why you have the jitters! It's always scary to host a workshop. You really won't have any idea how many people you will have until the last minute. You will get a fairly good representation by the early registration dead line, and they will wait for the last posting day possible!! However, others will opt for the last minute despite the fact that they could save money. I can tell you that you will probably get atleast 3 of our girls, maybe more. Don't give up yet!

        hey Paula,
You'd be insane to miss this workshop if you're really serious about continuing to dance. They (Carolena and Megha) are that good ... and then some! The odds of a tribal workshop occurring in Winnipeg are probably close to zero, and it's so much closer to drive to Fargo than to Saskatoon or Regina. I've already booked my hotel, and will definitely be driving down early Friday - if the others in the troupe don't go, you're most welcome to drive down with me. Feel free to give me a shout any time about that.

And Cherish, I'll be mailing you a money order and my registration this week! Promise!

          Carrie,

I'm in - just haven't actually registered yet. Plan to this week (look for it in the mail Cherish). I'm horrid with procrastination. At least my passport's good until '06.

Let me know what motel you're in - we'll try to get the same one. We can talk rides later in the summer - I'd planned on taking the my van as long as others will help take turns driving. It'll seat 7 max.

All of GaiaPente is planning on attending - I'll bug them tonight about registering.

I was one of those who emailed to say I am interested. I'm in the Chicago area. Birmingham is closer so it would be cheaper. Sorry, it would have been great though. I'm sending my positive thoughts and think the idea of getting a grant is also a very good one! You might also do some free advertising by listing your event in numerous places. There are a few places online. I know you probably are aware of them already but just for the heck of it, "by region, healers pages" and www.bhuz.com, I believe even some of the belly dance magazines allow free "events listings." Don't give up! You've got a ways to go. I think out of towners would also be very inticed if they knew there were some cool things to do in and around Fargo. People like a lot of bang for the buck. Well, that's my two cents anyway--chin up!!

Oooo.. a chicago dancer... I have to ask. Where should we shop while in town? I'd love to buy some bellydance things when we are out there for Domba!

        Hi LeAnn:
Is that you with your little one? I love babies, have four myself but you wouldn't call all of them babies (though sometimes I wonder LOL) I'll be at Domba too! Gosh, I order almost everything from around the country and sometimes from overseas. We have our studio costumer but she'll be busy dancing. Hmmmmmmmmm, well, we do have some places I've been checking out but I can't vouch for them so you'll have to see what you think. OK? Check out www.chicagobellydancer.com; Jasmin Jahal and Sonya Souk also have boutiques.

Yes, that's my little one. She loves to dance with me. She'll be coming out to Chicago with me, but Grandma is coming with to babysit. I'm going out there a bit early so I can spend time with my dearest friend. She moved out there 5 or so years ago. She will know of some fun places to shop too. If nothing else, there will be shopping at the event.

Free advertising is a great idea. Cherish, you can advertise for free to MPLS - St. Paul dancers through the Guild of Oriental Dance. If you want, I can find out how to post info :)

    Hey!
I'm new to tribe.net, from Sioux Falls S.D. and am very interested in the Workshop in Sept., I'll be putting in my vacation notice tonight. There's 3 other girls in our Troupe, they might come too, however, I'm more into the Tribal Style, the others are more Cabaret. We really wanted to make the workshop on April 2nd but did'nt have time, money so on so forth....
Anywho, I am really excited about this and will be there! I have plenty of time to plan this out and make the trip work. Can't wait to meet new people in the region!

Cool! I didn't know if there was much of a bellydancing scene in SD, but I'm glad to hear there is. And I'm glad you're planning on coming. :-)

Actually between the responses here and through email, it's sounding pretty good. There were a lot of people who I had no idea about that were interested, so I'm pretty sure now it'll fly. :-)

Advertise, advertise, advertise! You should design some posters & hang them at the local music shops. Another thing you could do is make some business cards & pass them out to everyone you know and even folks you don’t. I did this with my music website and it resulted in a lot of page visits. Kinko’s charged me something like $10 for 50 cards. They aren’t very “official-looking” business cards, but they’ve worked well.

My friend Mike posting to a bellydance list. Cool! :-)

For those of you who don't know Mike - he's a musician (obviously you got that from his post) in Fargo and a good friend of mine. He took most of the pics that are in my photo section including my avatar.

Hey Cherish - another option is advertising on the bellydance Yahoo groups. Here are the nationwide/worldwide ones that I belong to:

      groups.yahoo.com/group/belly-dance/
      groups.yahoo.com/group/Mid...ern_Dance/
      groups.yahoo.com/group/The..._Bulletin/

If you don't want to hassle with joining all those groups, send me your ad and I can post it periodically.

BTW, there have been a few Minnesota folks that I have run into online recently and I've steered them towards the workshop.

Woo hoo. You know you've made it big when you find yourself on google.

            But don't you mean 1/5th? :-D
            • Re: Cold feet

              Wed, June 22, 2005 - 10:56 AM
true - the extra 1/5th is an intentional ambigous conundrum, ie: there are always other influences while dancing and performing, so we acknowledge them as actually being part of the troupe - that's the other (nebulous) 5th.
