Sandbagging?

Hey there - all week our newspapers here in Winnipeg have been showing pictures of Fargo getting wetter and wetter! What's the situation like today? Being down stream from you guys we watch the Red River closely here. I think the Red is going to crest soon in Fargo right? It'll be another week before it crests here I believe, but I could have that all wrong. Living inside the Floodway, I'm fairly safe, but other parts of Manitoba aren't going to be so lucky........

Yeah, we've been having a lot of fun here. I've talked to a few people who wanted to come to our show this weekend but were sandbagging. :-/

Let's see...we crested yesterday in Fargo at 37.18 ft., which is about 3 ft. lower than in '97 but still 19 ft. over flood stage.

In Grand Forks, it already crested (47.85 ft, which is about 6 1/2 ft. lower than '97 and about 20 ft. over flood stage). I think it's supposed to crest later today or tomorrow, so I wouldn't think you guys would be too far behind.

It looks like this is the #5 worst flood (in Fargo) in the past 120 years or so...

I don't know what the Canadian equivalent of NOAA is, but I'm wondering if they have flood stage predictions online (NOAA does, which is where I got the info).

Blech. Yesterday my geomorphology prof told everyone in class that if they were thinking of living in Fargo long-term, they should drive around now and see where NOT to live. :-D

I hope you guys fair well up there! Let us know how it goes...

I think we'll crest around Apr 18; part of the reason for the delay I think is 'cause there are so many little tributaries dumping into the Red that haven't even come close to cresting yet. We have a flood forecaster/guru who works for the province and does all the modelling for floods. The Winnipeg Free Press is also a good source of info. The article this morning says we'll crest at 762.5-763.5 ft above sea level arounf Apr 18-19 (today we're at 752.8 ft). For some reason, north of the border river levels are measured in ft above sea level, while you guys typically use ft above normal river level. Just diff ways of saying the same thing. Winnipeg opened the Floodway gates last night to divert river water around the city. We're in the beginnings of a major 5 year project to widen our floodway to handle a 1 in 200 year flood. In '97 it came very close to failing, and we never want that to happen. Most communities between us and the border have built their own ring dikes since '97 and are being put to good use this year. If you are a farmer who's financial security depends on getting a crop in this spring you are quite likely f**ked this year.

        Oy vey...

Fargo unfortunately doesn't have any way to divert the river because we've got the Sheyenne River so close to the west, and Moorhead on the other side...

I'm surprised you guys actually measure the depth in feet rather than metres. :-D It makes much more sense to measure in ft. above sea level. They choose an arbitrary point in the city to measure things, and I keep wondering what they do if the depth changes at that point. *shaking head* Probably they do measure it relative to sea level, but maybe they figure that'll confuse people or something.

Oh yeah... INSIDE the city we use an arbitrary point, which is a pumping station along the river some where - that's our datum. So you might hear things like '20 ft above St James pumping station' which means nothing to many people. We commonly use a weird mix of metric and imperial - like we can't make up our minds which it's going to be. You'll buy 200 g of sliced ham at the grocery store but give your weight in pounds when at the doctor's. You buy liters of gas, but gallons of paint. go figure.
