X-POST: Big Beautiful Belly Dancer 2008 Calendar call for photos

Greetings all belly dancing beauties!

Last winter, an idea was brought up to create a calendar featuring our big, beautiful, belly-dancer (BBBD) sisters and there was such a huge, positive response that this idea has become a reality!

The creative mindset behind this idea, BBBD Meghan, asked BBBD Kamala Devi to chair this project, and with the help of some very motivated BBBD sisters, we are pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications from other BBBD sisters for the BBBD 2008 Calendar!

Click on the following link for additional information:

http://totallynortherntribal.com/BBBD.Calendar.htm

Please read all the information carefully and follow the instructions. If you have any questions, please send a Tribe PM to Calendar chairperson Kamala Devi.

The deadline for your application is July 31, 2008.

We are all looking forward to this project and are eager to see how the calendar turns out. We hope that this is successful enough to become an annual calendar.

Thanks everyone!

Kamala Devi and the BBBD 2008 Calendar Committee

DISCLAIMER: there is no connection between Totally Northern Tribal (TNT) and the BBBD 2008 Calendar. Calendar chairperson Kamala Devi, a member of TNT, linked off her TNT Member’s Page.

This is for all types of dancers, and will be useful for both Tribal and Cabaret belly dance.
Liquid Isolations and the Essence of Sword Dance
For Beginners to Advanced dancers. Distilled sword dance technique: instruction in extending hip, arm, and belly isolations and making them look ever-so-smooth-and-gooey while using sword balancing points. We’ll practice sword hold techniques and dramatic presentation, work on those all-important arms, and block a slow and sensual sword dance.

Evening show featuring Sabine, local talent and regional dancers

About Sabine
Sabine is a dance artist who has studied Middle Eastern Dance since 1988, and has been performing tribal style belly dance since 1999. She honors the roots of Tribal Belly dance in her classes, with troupe Tribalation! and with student troupe Sister Celebration. Dancers are taught how to cue and follow movements in an improvisational yet synchronous manner, creating beautiful dance energy on the stage and in the studio.

Sabine is a master of “Raks al Sayf,” the sword dance, where the grace and flow of the dance movements are contrasted by the dangerous sharpness of the huge Turkish Scimitars that she balances. Sabine has taught her own special brand of “Dangerous Sword Dancing” in workshops and festivals all over the Northwest. Sabine brings a strong and unique presence to the stage. Her dancing has been called “powerful”, “mesmerizing”, and “beautiful”.

Sabine is active in producing dance and cultural events in Oregon. She teaches weekly classes, and travels to teach workshops in sword dance and many aspects of Tribal and Cabaret style belly dance.

Anyone got anything exciting going on?

I'm teaching a new choreography that's very different from anything we've done before. I'll be very interested to see how people respond to it. (I'm actually a little nervous about how people will respond.)

I'm also revamping our movement vocabulary thanks to a hip problem. I'm trying to work on some balance to our moves so things aren't so "right hipped".

I also heard a rumor that the BDSS are going to be in Minneapolis in November...so I might have to drag my girls down there with me. :-)

So what projects do you all have going on? Workshops? Shows? Let's hear it!

The Durga Tour stops in Minneapolis!

Tempest is bringing The Durga Tour to Minneapolis!

She is most well-known for her Gothic Belly Dance performances and instruction, and is featured on the first ever GBD performance DVD produced by WorldDanceNewYork entitled “The Darker Side of Fusion” and is set to release “Bellydance for Beautiful Freaks,” an instructional DVD, this fall. You may also remember her from ‘Gothic Bellydance’ performance DVD.

On Wednesday, September 20th, Tempest will be offering two workshops here in Minneapolis:

4:00-5:30pm: Creating Sacred Space With Your Dance

Using ritual concepts from mystical spiritual traditions from both the East and West, we'll examine how the structure of a ritual can create a deeper sense of meaning and purpose in your performance. A basic understanding of Pagan spirituality is helpful, but not required (however, an open mind and creativity is!).

Workshop price: $25.00

7:00-8:30pm: Dancing Darkly – Introduction to Gothic Belly Dance

Gothic Belly Dance is the union of Middle Eastern Dance with the aesthetic, sound, and emotion of the Gothic subculture. More than just a look or a sojourn into alternative music, discover the theatrical elegance and drama that truly gives “Raks Gothique” its soul essence. We'll focus on key elements for performance, including movement, attitude, aesthetic, and presentation. All skill levels are welcome.

Workshop price: $35.00

9:00-10:00pm: Gothla

A Gothic hafla! Treat yourself to the incredible artistry of Tempest and various local talent. This is an intimate dance event which is free and open to participants in the “Dancing Darkly” workshop and a limited number of seats for the general public.

We are working to finalize the performance roster. If you would be interested in dancing, please let us know (solos are always nice, but duets, triads, and small groups are also welcome)!

Payment through PayPal is preferred; please send your payment to innerwilds@innerwilderness.com – putting your full name in the 'Comment' section and indicating if you'd like to dance in the Gothla.

This event is for ages 16 and up. Dancers 16-18 must attend with a paying parent or guardian to be admitted.

Both the workshops and the Gothla will be held at:

Sabathani Community Center
Banquet Center
310 East 38th Street
Minneapolis, MN 55409
612-827-5981
Workshop Cancelled

Hi ladies.

I'm really sorry, but I have to cancel the workshop. I would really love to see all of you again, but there's no way this will be financially feasible. Given this is the same thing that happened with the MECDA workshop in the spring, I'm inclined to think that Fargo just isn't able to handle hosting workshops and shows like this at this time.

When I've finished school and got a job, maybe I can go ahead and host things like this again. I'm hoping I'll be in a position at the point to take a hit if need be. Unfortunately, due to some family matters from the past few months, I just can't swing it right now.

Until that point, please keep posting here about events you've got coming up. I don't know what my school year will be like, but I'd like to try to make it to one or two workshops this year.

Stephanie, I know you really went out of your way to try to make it this weekend. You should be able to change your ticket for a fee so that you won't have lost your ticket money completely. I'm really sorry that I won't get a change to meet you soon. Maybe you can make it to Tribal Quest next year or something.

I'll get the refund checks out before Labor Day weekend. If you have any other questions, let me know. I do hope this doesn't upset anyone too deeply. I know that those of you who signed up to come are really dedicated dancers, and I realize this is very disappointing.

I have to make a decision on Sunday...

I've run the numbers and here's the situation:

The expenses for this workshop are going to be over $3500. Right now, I'm going to be $1600 down if I go through the workshop. I'm assuming I can make up around $300 with the show (which also worries me as we only have four performers), but that still leaves a deficit of $1300. I know a couple of you have said there are one or two people considering coming.

If those people come, and Paulette is willing to come out here herself (which would reduce costs by about $400...and I haven't checked with her about this), I would still need an additional 4 people to register.

So what it amounts to is that unless I have confirmation that six more people are coming *for sure*, I'm going to have to cancel the event. I'm willing to take a hit, but $900 is just more than I can afford.

I have to make a decision by Sunday, so if some people are sitting on the fence, please let me know today or tomorrow. Otherwise, I'll have to cancel the event.

I'm really sorry.

These are the registrations I have received:

MN:
Cindy
Anne
Marjorie
Rebecca

NE:
Barbara
Michele
Jennifer

ND:
LeAnn
Alicia

O Canada!:
Brenda
Darla

I know that Val and JT's are in the mail (although they weren't in my box as of this morning).

Is anyone else coming for sure that you ladies know of? I have to make a decision before next Monday on whether or not this will be feasible. At this point, including Val's and JT's regs, I would still need about 7 more people to register to pull this off.

Hopefully things will show up in my box, but I'm getting a bit nervous...so it would be good to know of anyone else who may be planning to come but hasn't said anything.

Thanks,

Hey all! I've been to a couple tribal dance events where button exchanges happen. Just wanted to see if other troupe have them. TNT does - and I could bring some along if we want to trade :)

Hi Cherish,

Being the natural magpies that we all are ("oooooohhhh . . . shiny things" as an unseen gravitational force draws us to new costume pieces on fellow dancers ;) do you know if Paulette will be bringing lots of goodies to sell?
Or do you have any other vendors coming? Give us a bit of a heads up re the vending if possible please :)

(Basically, should I just not pay the water bill? Or put an ad on ebay for my first born male? Just need to be prepared! LOL)

From Langley B.C. Canada hoping to join Paulette's workshop!

Hello there,
My name is Stephanie and I just returned from a work shop up in Kamloops B.C. with Sharon Moore who teaches GC. (Unfortunalty Sharon does not live close enough to my area to take regular lessons.) I have fallen in love with this "style" of dance. Sharon spoke about her mentor and teacher Paulette many times during the workshop. It turns out I will be in Mayville North Dakota in September to watch my son play football at Mayville university and so I am hoping to be able to attend Paulette's workshop that you are hosting while I am there.
I desperatly wish there was somone in my area who taught this style of dance!
I hope I can work out the details, it would be great to meet you all!
Stephanie

More September Info

Okay, I don't have this posted at the website, but I'll get it up there eventually.

The Friday night picnic will occur at Trollwood Park in north Fargo. It should be much easier to find than last year's picnic. :-D All you do is find Elm Street and head north until you deadend in the park.

The workshop will be taking place at the RDJ Rec Center, the same place as last year.

There will be catering included in the price of the workshop, although I still don't have an idea of prices or what food will be available. The caterer is revamping their menu and will get back to me next week on what they can offer. If you have ideas of stuff you'd like for lunch, post them now! :-) I'll probably be having Nichole's cater, so think of salad, sandwiches, veggies, soup...that sort of thing. Post ideas here! :-)

I was planning on having a post-workshop dinner at Saffron's again (or Passage to India...which I actually like better). This will also be on the registration form so that I can let them know how many to expect. :-)

So basically, everything else is taken care of except for workshop topics and catering. I'm hoping that will be finalized next week so I can get registration forms out.

Okay everyone. I finally got the info for the Labor Day Weekend workshop with Paulette up. I'm sorry I didn't get it sooner...but they changed permissions on the account, so I have to use my husband's account to get in there now. :-P

Anyway, the information page is at: http://myweb.cableone.net/mreich/awdc/tribal2006.html

The registration page is at: http://myweb.cableone.net/mreich/awdc/tg2006reg.htm

I've put links to maps on the website for each facility. I also made the registration form an HTML document so hopefully no one will have any problems with it.

If you can think of any other info that should be posted, let me know. Ditto with questions.

Woo hoo! We were asked to participate again in the Fargo Marathon. Rather than sticking us at the beginning of the race (like last time), we were at about 22.5 miles. Apparently this was a good thing for many runners as they said we'd get them to the end of the race. Likewise, several people (mostly men, of course) said they must be getting dehydrated or seeing mirages. One gentelman said he was feeling like he was back in Turkey. :-D

The highlights of the day were one of the runners kissing LeAnn (yep, full on the lips), another one trying to drag her off, and getting to go home after nearly 5 solid hours of dancing. It was a great time!

Costuming ideas / sources / etc? (Cross-posted)

On Wednesday, I'm having lunch with a friend of my stepdaughter. She's a nice young woman, mid-20s, who has been asked to dance at a friend's wedding. She has been told that she needs a costume that incorportes VERY SPECIFIC colors, to go with the bridal party. IMHO, it's a kind of weird color combination -- grass green, light brown, goldenrod yellow, and silver-gray.

Any recommendations for places to get costume pieces / fabrics / whatever that aren't too pricey, lots of available colors, that won't take too long to get / make?

Thanks for the help, guys!

Hey there - all week our newspapers here in Winnipeg have been showing pictures of Fargo getting wetter and wetter! What's the situation like today? Being down stream from you guys we watch the Red River closely here. I think the Red is going to crest soon in Fargo right? It'll be another week before it crests here I believe, but I could have that all wrong. Living inside the Floodway, I'm fairly safe, but other parts of Manitoba aren't going to be so lucky........

New class format in January

For those of you interested in classes this next semester, things will be changing a bit.

The first change is that classes will be 1 hour long. Tuesday classes will be continue to be 9-10 p.m. Thursday will change to 7-8 p.m.

The second change is that I will be spending the first half of the semester teaching a "tribal choreography". As we go through the choreography, we'll be covering several of the fast moves and a few of the slow moves that are part of our ATS repetoire. However, this will enable people to see how the moves are put together and used with the music. After finishing the choreography, we'll delve into using those moves improvisationally as well as hopefully covering most of the remaining moves.

Classes for this semester will end on December 15th and resume on January 10th.

Happy holidays everyone!

We had a really nice hafla tonight. Thanks to the attendees, performers and especially the people who brought donations of food.

Sarah and I performed the Enya veil routine, LeAnn performed to Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride", and of course we performed a couple ATS pieces. We also had Circe and the Shimmy Sisters perform.

I think we got about 8-10 bags of food for the emergency food pantry.

Thanks everyone!

I've scheduled our hafla/recital for Saturday, December 3rd at 7:00 p.m. It will be in the Cul-De-Sac Lounge, the bottom floor of the Memorial Union at NDSU. Remember to let people know to bring canned goods for the emergency food pantry.

People can perform on the small stage or on the floor, whichever is more comfortable. If you'd like perform, drop me a line!

The tapes, boss, the tapes!

Okay, so I sent out approximately half of the tapes today...although I admit that most of them went to Canada (because it takes so long to get things up there, I figured I'd start with them). I'm going to try to make daily runs to the PO to send off the tapes as I get them finished, so I'd say they should be in people's hands by the middle of next week. (I have nothing to do with how long the post office takes, though.) :-)

Please post your thoughts when you get them. I know it's been a while, but I'm looking for ways to smooth out the bumps for future events. I have to admit that given this was my first "solo" workshop, it went better than I was expecting...even with the locked doors. :-D

(And I'm looking into getting someone to do DVD production for next year...) ;-)

Cheers!

Cherish and Leann,
Here is the link to the 3rd Coast Tribal workshop and performance in January.

http://www.urbangypsy.cc/workshops.html

It runs Friday - Sunday, but I am only taking the Saturday workshops with Sharon and the one with Cammi Vance. I am the only one from TNT going, so if you ladies would like to go that would be great. I hear she is still looking for performers, as they will have a friday night restaurant show and saturday evening show. I have volunteered to do a solo :)

Also they have a special hotel rate of $59 a night at the Country Inn and Suites in Fort Worth...

Let me know if you are interested. We might even be able to come up with a performance idea together?!?!

Hi all.

I just got an email from someone who is planning a "Renn Faire" type wedding and would like to have us perform at the meal. She'd also like two other types of entertainment and asked for suggestions. Does anyone have any ideas or know anyone locally? The best I could think of would be a "jester", but I have no idea who she should call...

Thanks

Update on DVDs/VHS

Since a couple people have asked:

As far as the newsclip, it's going to be a pain in the butt to actually get it on the DVDs/VHS. WDAY will not provide copies for people, either. I also thought I lost the tape, but my wonderfully organized husband found it. So what I think the best thing to do is to make an MPEG and put it on the website. I'll see about doing it next week and I'll post the web address here.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I did think I said it would be 4-8 weeks for the videos, correct? I was going to try to have the VHS done this week, but it won't be until next week...assuming things go alright next week. (For those of you who don't know, I do have some heavy duty family issues right now, and I've been out of town more in the past 3 weeks than I've been home.) I'm sorry this has taken me longer than I'd hoped, but I do promise to get it done as soon as I possibly can.

The DVDs will probably not be ready until the end of October. I was expecting a paycheck at the end of this month to buy an external HD (since I don't have the necessary 10-15 GB on my computer HD), but the paperwork for my job didn't get filed until last week...which means the paycheck (and HD) won't show up until mid-October. Again, as soon as I have the equipment, I do promise to get this out as soon as I can. (I hate waiting, too, so I do feel your pain.)

If anyone has questions, let me know and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

I'm just curious because I had one last night.

One of my students was saying her low back hurt after doing body waves, and I told her she wasn't keeping her pelvis forward and putting stress on her low back.

As I was demonstrating, I realized that my body wave isn't as deep as it could be because I wasn't keeping my pelvis all the way forward, either. (I was actually releasing it back part way through the move, which was causing me to stop halfway down.)

Sometimes I get this disconnect between my brain and the particular body part I should be moving, or in this case, not moving. It's always nice when they reconnect. :-D (I guess I've been having a lot of those since the baby was born.)

Hi all!

I got the news clip from the show converted to MPEG and AVI. I put the MPG here:

http://myweb.cableone.net/mreich/awdc/NewsClip.mp4

Unfortunately, the AVI is 12 MB, so I can't put it on my website. If you can't view the MPEG, then I can burn a copy of the AVI and mail it with the DVDs. Just let me know.

Happy viewing!

How would everyone feel about some rather fusiony folks teaching at next year's workshop? Or are we all bent on authentic ATS teachers? (Is it allowable to use ATS and authentic in the same sentence?)

I'd really like to know because, if you can believe it, people are starting to book up for next year already...

Love Your Body Day

I was wondering if we should sponsor a "Love Your Body Day" expo *somewhere* in Fargo/Moorhead. Of course, it obviously should include bellydancing. :-D

Love Your Body Day:

Do you love what you see when you look in the mirror?

Hollywood and the fashion, cosmetics and diet industries work hard to make each of us believe that our bodies are unacceptable and need constant improvement. Print ads and television commercials reduce us to body parts — lips, legs, breasts — airbrushed and touched up to meet impossible standards. TV shows tell women and teenage girls that cosmetic surgery is good for self-esteem. Is it any wonder that more than 80% of fourth-grade girls have been on some form of fad diet?

Women and girls spend billions of dollars every year on cosmetics, fashion, magazines and diet aids. These industries can't use negative images to sell their products without our assistance.

Together, we can fight back.

Love Your Body Day 2005 is October 19

hey girl, check out: http://www.honoringyourbelly.com/ . Lisa was doing some sold-out workshops at TQNW on just that. I know she's worked with Tribal dancers before that too (Sisters of the Shawl in Vermont used to have a few of her articles posted on her website.).

I had 25 people in my bellydance class tonight, and I found out that people are calling 2 and 3 days beforehand to reserve passes for the class.

I never thought I'd have this problem.

Anyway, if all goes well, I'll be adding a class for Thursday evenings, too.

Hey Cherish,

Just had a few questions for you about the workshop (can you believe it is almost here?!):

1. Do you need any help on Friday with the cookout? Mike and I are planning to attend.

2. Is Carolena bringing any goodies (jewelry, dvds, etc) from the Fat Chance store? Just want to know if I should bring a really big bag of money. :)

Thanks!

LeAnn posted this on the Mecda list, but I thought I'd put it here, too.

Amber Waves just had the pleasure of dancing for the Capital A'Fair
in Bismark, ND. It is a great place to perform! Granted it was a
little hot, but the accommodations were very nice. We were allowed to
use the Capital building's restroom to get ready. It has a lovely
little sitting area with full length mirrors and wicker furniture.
Getting ready was a very comfortable experience.

We had 2 sets. One at noon and another at 3. We had free reign with
our performance, so we added some audience participation at the end
of our sets. The first time it was a few little girls and an older
gentleman. They were all great sports and the man even stole the show
at the end! The second set several ladies and a few young girls
joined us. They had a great time learning the moves.

So many people came up to us afterwards to ask about workshops or to
tell us they enjoyed our performance. It was such a pleasant
experience for us. We will perform for the Capital A'fair any time!

Would anyone be interested in purchasing a DVD of the show if I decide to produce one? I'm trying to decide (and would need an okay from Carolena and Meg as to whether or not I could include their performance). It also wouldn't be professionally produced since I doubt there'd be enough interest for that...(I just got a DVD burner, so I'd be doing the editing and such myself)

Thoughts?

Well, or anyone can. :-)

I was just wondering if tribesters who are coming to Tribal:Pura could introduce themselves a bit...name, rank, serial number, what kind of dance you do (and who inspired it), etc. It'd be cool to know something about each other when we all get together in Sept.

Cherish - have you been getting a good response? I know several TNT members are planning on making the trip (and performing too :) )

The Bismarck Tribune did a great article on Sarah since she's teaching bellydancing in Bismarck this summer. It's at:

http://www.bismarcktribune.com/articles/2005/06/26/news/life/lif01.txt

I'll forwarn you that there were some errors (because the paper's policy is to not let people read the article before it's printed). Other than that, I thought it was really great. :-)

Hi guys...

I've been getting a lot of news of people being busy or not having money...and I'm starting to reconsider if the Carolena workshop really is going to fly.

So, in that vein, could you guys tell me what you've heard. Are you guys thinking of coming? Can you honestly swing it? If I cancel soon, I won't have to lose "my deposit", so to speak...but if I wait too long, then I will.

So please fill me in since a lot of you are out of town. Most of what I've heard has been "no money" or "no interest"...whereas two months ago everyone said they were really excited about coming....

This year, I'm hoping to do a Middle Eastern Dance night at a local place. Given there aren't really any upscale middle eastern restaurants, I'm thinking a coffee place might work better. Any suggestions? I'd like to get this worked out over the summer so that we can get started in the fall.

I'll start with the Radisson (since it's close), Doublewood, and Super8 (both of which are by the mall), if that sounds good. I'll post the results tomorrow or Tuesday (and put them on the web page).

Pretty soon the semester is going to be over, and I'll be able to get to a project that's been hanging over my head: updating our website.

One thing I would like to add is a section where I can post rave reviews about us. :-D Actually, part of what I'm looking for is feedback. So, if you've taken a class or seen us perform, I'd really like to know what you thought...even if it's bad. (Objective feedback will help us to get better....)

I'd also like permission to post it on the website, if you're okay with it. (Admittedly I'm far more likely to put positive feedback on the website.) If not, no big deal, but I'd still like to know what people think. And if you want to post it or email it, either is fine with me.

So please consider sending me some feedback...

Hey all, we're coming up on Cairo Carnivale, and the membership prices are going to go up.

Since our chapter of Mecda is supposed to represent Montana, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Manitoba (as well as North Dakota), it'd be nice to get a higher representation in those states. I hope you'll consider joining. We've got big plans to host a workshop with a big name instructor fall of 2006. (I won't say who until we've got her confirmed.) We're also trying to create more places for people to be exposed to bellydance...especially in the smaller communities around the states. So please join!

Keep in mind that this is the group that hosted the show and workshop in April, so we're already on our way to doing good things. :-)

The MECDA website is http://www.mecda.org/index.htm

Hi all.

I've had questions about where people are staying (or should stay) while in town for the workshop. Also, some people would like to fly in and are wondering if they can get rides to and from the hotel/workshop/show. Would anyone be willing to volunteer? I'd love to do it, but I have the feeling I'm going to have my hands full trying to make sure that Carolena and Megha have everything they need.

So I've been pondering something, and I'm curious about other people's perceptions...especially those who were at MECDA.

We've been sort of doing a mix of stuff lately. I'm finding some people have preferences for improv and some for choreography...and then we're playing with our look as a troupe, too. (Wait 'til you see us in Sept.!)

I'm starting to wonder if it makes sense to divide into two troupes. I know...ha, ha...sounds funny since we don't exactly have an army. But I'm having cognitive dissonance over doing strict ATS and then also mixing it with some rather modern fusiony stuff. (Did anyone at MECDA have that when we did our dance to Storms in Africa?) On the other hand, it'll be mostly if not all the same people, so it seems a bit silly...but then I wonder if some people would rather focus very strongly on one type of dance and spend less time on the other.

I'm also curious if anyone on here has experience with this sort of thing.

Anyone?

Sarah and I will be performing Storms in Africa (the veil routine we performed at the MECDANP show)...but there's almost another two hours of talent to see, too! :-)

Let me know if you need tickets. I have some, or you can purchase them at the door.

Did anyone else get pics? Could I buy/pay for a cd of them?

Anyone want to donate large sums of cash (oh, like $400) so that Sarah can go to Chicago for the Domba workshop?

If you win the lotto, will you look us up? :-)

Maybe we could have a shimmy-a-thon. $1 for 10 seconds of shimmying? Could we really shimmy for that long? :-D

If anyone feels up to it, maybe you can email her a get well card (megan dot keller at ndsu dot edu). She's got cheerleading tryouts on the 17th, so wish her luck (especially in healing her foot so she'll be able to try out).

1 - I know you guys are as hyped as I am. They've given a fall 2005 date to release Tribal Style: A Documentary. More info is available at MizHealers.tribe.net or www.igctribal.net (or com?).

2 - Web site address has changed: it's now amberwavesbellydance.com It should be easier to remember. :-)

And I think that's it for now...

Doh! This didn't work the first time.

So here's what I'm thinking...

Friday evening we could have a grill/hang-out at a local park. I could bring veggie dogs for those who don't do cow.

Saturday
9:30-3:30 Workshop with 1 1/2 hours for a lunch break
8 p.m. show!

Sunday
9:30-4:30 workshop with 1 1/2 hours for lunch break

Does anyone want to do something on Sunday, like a henna party or hafla (or both?). Would it make more sense to do the park thing on Sunday?

Also, did anyone have their heart set on having private lessons. If not, no big deal...if so, we'll have to figure something out since the weekend is pretty packed up.

Let me know what you want to do, since I have no clue how out of town people want to do things...would you rather lounge around your hotel rooms?

Hi all.

I redid our web page a bit so that it's cleaner. I also added a schedule for level 1 classes (so that those of you in level 2 who want to work on specific moves can come on those days).

Let me know if any of the links aren't working right, I need to add something, or something isn't looking right (probably browser issues). I'll see if I can fix it.

Another fantastic show...

Wow! I watched the video of the show last night, and I think it was really great. IMO, it was fairly professional looking.

I saw a couple flubs, mostly due to me. Everyone else did a great job, especially when I messed up on cueing a couple times. Overall, though, I thought all the performances looked fantastic.

I think that next semester, we're going to try to make the setting a bit more intimate, though...no stage... It was really hard to tell from the audience if they were enjoying themselves or not. I was also running around afterwards trying to make sure no one forgot anything, so I didn't really get a chance to talk to anyone in the audience. What feedback did you guys get afterwards?

I'll check tomorrow if I can get things burned to DVD.

I just want people to be thinking about these things. I know it seems like a long time away, but the more prepared we are, the better things will go.

In April will be the ND bellydance convention.

Also, in early April will be our recital/tribal hafla. I really hope these two don't cross...but then again, maybe it would be good for them to.

June: Suhaila will be in Milwaukee (so I've heard through the grapevine) doing her level 1 workshop. Let me know if you want to go. I think the cost is around $400.

end of July/beginning of August: Tribal Quest Northwest
ROADTRIP! I'm not sure how much this will be, but save up as much as you can. The workshops will be SO worth it...and the shows are spectacular...filled with groups like Fat Chance, Gypsy Caravan and Ultra Gypsy. (If the Winnepeg/Minneapolis people want to come with, let us know!)

September 3rd/4th...Carolena in Fargo
Hopefully this one won't be too expensive (certainly not as expensive as TQNW)...but if you can help out, let me know. I haven't gotten the contract yet...I'd like see if there's something about a show.

Oh man...last night was quite the ride.

Our first *real* show. We did very well. I think we even surprised ourselves, expecting at least one major mess up...but it didn't happen.

Recap: We were invited to the Spirit Room's fundraiser, primarily to cover during costume changes (and let me tell you...there were a lot of them). The Shimmy Sisters (the other group performing) does a couple different styles: Modern, Egyptian, gypsy. Either way, the costuming was somewhat on the "minimal" side...not a lot of glitz (except for one beledi dress). So after seeing seven numbers of this, we come out in full regalia...mirrored cholis, full skirts, scarves, tassel belts, lots of coins and cowries and jewelry.

I think we scared the audience. Hubby even said that Amy had that "Amazon" look, like she might hurt someone if they looked at her the wrong way. (It's not her fault she's so tall!)

We did our moving meditation in silence, then did a faster song. It was very ethnic sounding (very different from the stuff before), so the audience was rather surprised by the whole thing.

After they did three songs, we did our SLOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWW song. Very cool...lots of hisses.

They did another song, and then we did our "capper"...a six minute faster song where we broke into duets and Kaarin spent time leading. People were clapping with the music and getting into it.

Afterwards we had SO many comments about how it *must* have been choreographed, how great we looked and danced, etc. One of the dancers from the other group said that her sister liked our dances better than theirs. I felt kind of bad for her, but so it goes.

I had someone inquire about classes for next semester. :-)

Anyway, the audience really seemed to get a kick out of us, after the initial shock. I hope the recital goes as well next week.

Opa! ;-)

Hey all.

Shira (from shira.net) got back to me about her workshop prices. It sounds like we might be able to afford doing something with her and NOT have to go deeply into debt.

A list of the workshops she offers are available at http://www.shira.net/classes.htm

Would you guys be interested in any of these? If so, when would a good time be to have a workshop?
